Latin name:

  • Varanus indicus (Daudin - 1802).

Subgenus:

  • Euprepiosaurus.

English name:

  • Mangrove monitor.

Distribution and habitat:


Distribution:

  • Northern Australia, New Guinea and some surrounding islands including Caroline island, Marianas island and Marshall island. This species is widely distributed.  They particularly live in the mangroves along the coast.  

Habitat:

  • Tropical.

  • Mangroves.

Body characteristics:

  • 110 - 150 cm.

  • There are many different pattern (color) types due to their wide distribution.

  • The females are much smaller.

  • Advised: at least 1,5 m² for a pair.

Animals per enclosure:

  • The females are tolerant towards each other. More than 1 female can be kept together with a male.

    • average: 22º - 30º Celsius.
    • basking: 40º - 50º Celsius.

Diet:

  • Many kinds of insects, fish, crabs, snails, small birds, eggs and small mammals.

Breeding:

Clutch size:

  • up to 10 eggs, but mostly clutches of 3 to 6 eggs.  In particularly this species more than one clutch can be laid within a period of a year.

Incubation temperature:

  • 26.5º - 29º Celsius.

Incubation length:

  • 152 - 199 days.

Remarks:

  • This species is often confused with "Varanus doreanus".  "Varanus spinulosus" is formerly known as "Varanus indicus spinulosus".  It has later on been described as a separate species.
